Recently I was warmly invited into the beautiful home of Mieke Smit of Dreamstitch. It was my first interview for the Conversations section of my website, Cupcakes & Bunting, so I was feeling rather nervous as I left my daughter collecting tadpoles with our homeschool group in a local park and drove to Tamahere. I stopped at Jack’s Coffee Lounge in Naylor Street, Hamilton to pick up the sweet treat I had promised to bring. This is something I plan to do for all the makers that I interview, because isn’t it always nice to have a little sweet something to nibble on while sharing a pot of tea and a good conversation?

When I arrived at the end of the cul-de-sac where Mieke lives I couldn’t remember the number of her house.  I fiddled around with my phone, purchased just the day before, trying unsuccessfully to open the email she had sent me with her address details. I was conscious that it was time I should be knocking on her door by now so I took a deep breath and looked at the three houses around me. It was immediately obvious that the one directly in front of me had to be the one. It was so European looking and just seemed to suit Mieke so well. Luckily it proved to be the correct choice and a minute later I was sitting in Mieke’s kitchen and the kettle was on! We sat on a pair of comfy fireside chairs, upholstered with vintage wool blankets, sipping our cups of tea and enjoying the Gluten Free Carrot Cake Loaf with cream cheese icing and Oaty Chocolate Truffles that I had bought at Jack’s. Mieke uses the fleece from her own pet alpacas Obi, Donte and Dreem in her handwork.

She knits, crochets, felts, wet-felts, needle-felts, embroiders and makes sculptural dolls and Waldorf dolls.

Mieke also caters for customers who are feeling creative, selling beautiful wooden knitting needles, knitting forks, crochet hooks and stars.  She sells kits to enable those that wish to create their own dolls from felt.  Her range includes knight, noble man, mermaid, pirate, daffodil girl, lady violet, ponga boy and seed sower.
